WESTON THEATER COMPANY OUR HISTORY

During the Great Depression and in the midst of Weston’s long, dark winters when the town was cut off from villages on the other side of the hills, neighbors came together to put on plays that brought to life stories of the world beyond. From these beginnings, families like the Walkers, the Lloyds, and others, created a first-class theater that never lost the connection to its town and the surrounding region. The pathway from the Walker Farm south on Route 100 to The Playhouse on the Green became known as the “Avenue of the Stars.” Come the 1950s, the theater had become a mainstay of Southern Vermont’s cultural landscape and The Playhouse venue was recognized as an attractive destination for out-of-town visitors. By the turn of the last century and under the 30-year leadership of the ‘3 Guys’, Weston transformed into a professional theater. Broadway and regional theater stars made their way to the town summer after summer to create first-class entertainment for a welcoming audience and the theater became known for celebrating the classics and nurturing new stories. Today, the theater’s 86-year legacy

continues as it creates exceptional theater in its exceptional town, telling stories that connect us all to one another and to the world on the other side of the hills.

WESTON THEATER COMPANY NEWWORKS

Postcard Plays , 2020, photo by Skye Chalmers Weston’s Original Works programs are grounded in the belief that the voice of the author is central to shaping our cultural conversation locally, nationally, and internationally. When we nurture new writing, we nurture new points of view and foster connections within our community and beyond.

Weston’s 2022 Artists’ Retreat featured Isabella Dawis , Tidtaya Sinutoke , and Nana Dakin (not pictured) and their work in development, SUNWATCHER , an experimental chamber musical inspired by classical Noh theatre.

SUNWATCHER intertwines the stories of two women – astronomer Hisako Koyama and the Japanese sun Goddess Amaterasu – and celebrates the extraordinary dedication of “hidden figures”.

SHOW NOTES CREATED & COMPILED BY FORMER ARTISTIC ASSOCIATE & EDUCATION COORDINATOR Rachel Liff

Protest, Resistance, and the AMERICAN MUSICAL

“Facing a dying nation of moving paper fantasy, Listening for the new told lies, with supreme visions of lonely tunes…”

Artists in America – musicians, writers, painters, theater makers – have a long history of using their medium as a tool for political resistance. Protest music, in particular, is a tradition as old, if not older, than our nation’s founding; spirituals and battle hymns, folks songs and

jazz standards, rap, hip-hop, and rock & roll all have laid claim to this powerful and communal art form. The theater has likewise been a home for social and political commentary since the construction of the earliest American stages. In 1967, following what is now referred to as the “golden age” of musical theater (the canon

includes shows such as Oklahoma! and My Fair Lady ), Hair revived that long standing tradition with an anti-war, pro- love rock score that took on the contemporary, youthful undercurrent of the late 1960s. TWO OF THE CREATORS Hair , Gerome Rangi and James Rado, met while performing in the same off-Broadway show in 1964. Inspired by the countercultural artistic and political movements happening around them, they devised an idea for a musical that told the semi-autobiographical story of a group of young hippies grappling with identity, love, sex, freedom, and the

mainstream political climate. They were soon connected with composer Galt MacDermot, who was, ironically, rather far removed from the hippie communities like the one in NYC’s East Village that Rangi and Rado were a part of. However, the material excited MacDermot, and the trio began their collaboration. With rock music as their vehicle and a rich history of experimental theater guiding the development of each chorus and verse, Hair wasborn.

about [what was happening] and see film clips, but you'd never experience it. We thought, 'This is happening in the streets,' and we wanted to bring it to the stage.” It wasn’t just protest music at the heart of Hair ; it was the protest itself, live and in full celebration. COMMERCIAL SUCCESS NOT ONLY solidified the viability of rock musicals, but created space for scores of future musicals that held a mirror up to American politics, serving as a cultural reckoning. Without Hair, there may have never HAIR’S

THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE HAS AN UNIQUE ABILITY TO BRING US TOGETHER IN COMMUNITY. Theater demands that stories unfold in real-time, to a live audience, by fusing a variety of artistic designs into a singular, unified vision. Hair broke the mold by redefining what that vision could look like on a Broadway stage. "I'm proudest of the fact that we captured what was happening at that time," Rado said in a 2009 interview. "It was very important historically, and if we hadn't written it, there would not be any [theatrical]
