TRIVIA Turn on the Hair was the first commercially successful rock musical. By 1970, nineteen international productions of Hair had been staged in languages such as Swedish,
German, Portuguese, Italian, and Serbian.
The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hair was the last musical theater album to reach the number one spot on the Billboard 200 ( Hamilton peaked at number 2).
Several major theater owners declined to produce the eventual Broadway production of Hair due to its potentially controversial material. Producer Michael Butler was eventually able to persuade the owner of the Biltmore (now Samuel J. Friedman Theatre) to take a chance on the show.
